Christmas 2010

I am grateful to the BBC for their recent mini-series depicting the events leading up to the birth of Christ.  Whilst it may not have been the most accurate portrayal of the Biblical story, it was powerful in its highlighting of the lives of the main characters and the traumas they must have gone through, particularly Mary and Joseph.  Mary became a social outcast, a whore in the eyes of her social circles.  Joseph struggled with the devastating feelings of betrayal at war with his deeply honourable sensibilities.

The end of the story, with the Christ lying in the manger, moved me deeply.  I am somewhat cynical about the whole commercial garbage that has swamped this momentous event, and I was glad of the graphic reminder of the real reason for the season - God with us.

The thought unfolded further in church on Christmas morning as I mused how that, because of Easter, God with us becomes Christ in us, the hope of glory.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.
